It seems like every day mothers in our country are given some new device that distances us more and more from our babies. The bucket seat is a prime example. With this nifty invention, a baby could go all day without being picked up. Pop him in his car seat and mothering is as easy as putting it into the car, onto the stroller, into the highchair…no need to pick him up at all. Not that it can’t be totally useful at times, but there is definitely a tendency to over use it. So I searched for an alternative that would help make being a new mother easier but would also facilitate bonding with my baby. That is when I discovered babywearing.
Karma Baby, the Carrier
These baby carriers are the pouch style. It goes on like a sash and is a one-shouldered carry. Fit is very important for a pouch sling. Karma Baby has a nice sizing guide on their website with the appropriate warning of “when in doubt, size down”. Better for your sling to be a bit snug then not hold your baby securely! They do have a return policy if you find your sling is the wrong size. It does cost a small return shipping fee. On the website there are a variety of styles, but they are phasing out all but the organic line of slings, so there are some limited sizes available. Karma baby slings can carry up to a 35 pound toddler. There are several different ways to hold your baby using the pouch sling. Semi-reclined in a cradle carry, facing out in a kangaroo carry and a hip carry are just a few of the ways available to use this sling. These slings have a pouch and a toy ring.
